Deux coins sont légèrement abimés (voir photos) et une griffe est visible sur le sommet d'une des enceintes.
Il y a de très lègères griffes à peine visibles sur le côté et sur le sommet.

tube replacement on Vincent SV236 amplifiers : beware there are two versions of SV236 MKI model

The new version of the Vincent SV236 is called SV236 MKII. Before that they produced SV236 MKI. But there's a trick. The SV236 MKI comes in two versions…

Version 1 is easily recognizable because it does not have a preamp output.
In that version you have two 6DJ8 tubes inside the amp and a single 12AX7 tube in front of the amp (for arrange the NF-Signal to the left and rigth channel tubes).

Version 2 does have the preamp outpout.
In that version you have two 12AX7 tubes inside the amp and another 12AX7 tube in front of the amp (for arrange the NF-Signal to the left and rigth channel tubes).

So, putting 3 12AX7 tubes inside a SV236 MKI version 1 does lead to obvious sound problems !

Dès le 1er février 2010, l’achat d'une clé USB, d'un lecteur mp3 ou d'un disque dur externe vous coûtera plus cher.

En effet, à partir de cette date, vous paierez également une "rémunération pour copie privée". Cette extension de la rémunération pour copie privée intervient à la demande de la société de gestion Auvibel.

En effet, les recettes perçues sur les "anciens" supports tels que les CD et les cassettes ont diminué. C’est la raison pour laquelle la société de gestion Auvibel a demandé l’extension de ce qu’on appelle la "taxe sur la copie privée", bien qu’il ne s’agisse pas réellement d’une taxe puisque les recettes de cette rémunération pour copie privée ne sont pas destinées aux caisses de l’Etat belge mais bien au secteur de la création.

Concrètement, vous devrez payer, à partir du 1er février, une rémunération supplémentaire pour les cartes mémoire, les clés USB, les lecteurs mp3 et mp4, les GSM avec fonction mp3 et/ou mp4, les disques durs externes et les "appareils de salon à disque dur intégré" tels que les enregistreurs DVD avec disque dur.    Les nouvelles rémunérations sont comprises dans le prix de vente. Elles varient en fonction de la capacité, allant de 0,15 euro (pour les cartes mémoire et les clés USB de plus de 16 Go) à 13 euros (pour un appareil de salon à disque dur intégré).

En outre, le prix de tous les produits un peu plus anciens tels que les DVD et les CD audio augmentera également à partir du 1er février. Cette augmentation est de l’ordre de 0,12 euro à 2 euros.

Ainsi, l’a justifié le gouvernement : "certes, le recours à une technique forfaitaire aura pour conséquence que la rémunération réclamée le sera à tous, et donc également aux consommateurs qui ne commettent aucun acte de piraterie (ainsi, lorsque la cassette vidéo ne servira qu’à enregistrer une fête de famille). Recorded music doesn’t sound as good as it used to. Recordings sound muddy, clipped and lack punch. This is due to the ‘loudness war’ that has been taking place in recording studios. To make a track stand out from the rest of the pack, recording engineers have been turning up the volume on recorded music. Louder tracks grab the listener’s attention, and in this crowded music market, attention is important. And thus the loudness war – engineers must turn up the volume on their tracks lest the track sound wimpy when compared to all of the other loud tracks. However, there’s a downside to all this volume. Our music is compressed. The louds are louds and the softs are loud, with little difference. The result is that our music seems strained, there is little emotional range, and listening to loud all the time becomes tedious and tiring.

What happened to dynamic range ?

What happened to dynamic range ? That's a question that should be asked of record labels, producers, artists, and last but not least, recording and mastering engineers. The question needs to be asked because we're the ones responsible for what's happened to our music. Much of the music we listen to today is nothing more than distortion with a beat. Great music is suffering because it lacks dynamic range. When music lacks dynamic range, it lacks punch, emotion, and clarity. The record labels blame digital downloads, MP3s, CD burners, and others for the lack of CD sales. While there is some truth to their constant whining, they only have themselves to blame for the steady decline in CD sales. The record labels need to reevaluate what they consider to be good music.

The contrast vs. resolution thread (still yet again) brings back long suppressed memories. In the 1950's, after my obligitory stint in Korea, I spent a couple of years at RCA working on value implementation of commercial television. This simply meant cutting the costs of the TV set enough so that RCA could make sufficient profits to satisfy both Elvis Presley and the stockholders. The design engineers had produced the Model 630 set with 30 tubes that was intended to squeeze every last photon of quality of of the broadcast signal. All aspects of the picture, size, linearity, contrast, grey scale, and resolution could be adjusted. The set cost a fortune to make. If you are my age you will remember that a 19" screen B&W TV in a coffin shaped cabinet sold for over $1000.

Our consumer testing showed that all this complexity was unnecessary and worked against market acceptance. A high tube count meant frequent repair visits for tube burnouts and the many controls meant even more frequent visits when Junior played "space pilot" with the adjustments. The public preferred a bright, high contrast picture. Consumer panels judged brighter more contrasty pictures to be "sharper" and of higher quality than higher resolution pictures with full grey scales. Not much else mattered. The adjustment controls and the quality enhancing circuits beloved by the design engineers could be eliminated without influencing consumer acceptance. Costs tumbled and sales soared. We set the stage for the "vast wasteland" that TV has become.

Now substitute photography for TV. To paraphrase P.T. Barnum, "No manufacturer ever went broke underestimating the taste of the photographic public." I'm sure camera manufacturers (including Leica) and film makers conducted tests similar to those that we ran and/or read the reported results of these tests in the IEEE journals. Except for a few cranks the general public neither wants nor values high resolution large sized photos. The largest selling category of cameras is P&S, soon to be overtaken by digital cheapies, and the modal enlargement size is 4"x6". In my next trip to the Smithsonian Museum I expect to see a Leica M3 in an exhibit case in the Hall of Abandoned Technologies, vying for space alongside that old TV set, a mechanical typewriter, and a slide rule.

Because of perceived discrepancies between early and more recent determinations, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently revised its standard curves as defined in ISO 226, in response to the recommendations of a study coordinated by the Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University, Japan. The study produced new curves by combining the results of several studies, by researchers in Japan, Germany, Denmark, UK, and USA. (Japan was the greatest contributor with about 40% of the data.) This has resulted in the recent acceptance of a new set of curves standardized as ISO 226:2003. The report comments on the surprisingly large differences, and the fact that the original Fletcher-Munson contours are in better agreement with recent results than the Robinson-Dadson, which appear to differ by as much as 10–15 dB especially in the low-frequency region, for reasons that are not explained.

Nyquist's Theorem :

Before sound as acoustic energy can be manipulated on a computer, it must first be converted to electrical energy (using a transducer such as a microphone) and then transformed through an analog-to-digital converter into a digital representation. This is all accomplished by sampling the continuous input waveform a certain number of times per second. The more often a wave is sampled the more accurate the digital representation. Nyquist's Law, named in 1933 after scientist Harry Nyquist, states that a sound must be sampled at least twice its highest analog frequency in order to extract all of the information from the bandwidth and accurately represent the original acoustic energy. Sampling at slightly more than twice the frequency will make up for imprecisions in filters and other components used for the conversion.

For example, human hearing ranges from 20Hz to 20,000Hz, so to imprint sound to a CD, the frequency must be sampled at a rate of 40,000Hz to reproduce the 20,000Hz signal. The CD standard is to sample 44,100 times per second, or 44.1 kHz.

Enregistrer une radio internet et obtenir des morceaux séparés sur le disque dur

Le son des radios internet, même avec un débit de 128k, n'est certainement pas ultra-hifi, on est d'accord. Cependant pour les mélomanes il peut être intéressant d'écouter certaines des radios très spécialisées qui fleurissent sur la toile, pour découvrir les bons morceaux qui complèteront la collection.

Pour éviter de perdre du temps à écouter des morceaux qu'on connait déjà ça peut être intéressant d'enregistrer la radio web puis d'écouter l'enregistrement à son aise plus tard. Dans certains pays l'enregistrement d'émissions radio est autorisé pour autant que l'usage soit restreint au cercle familial strict.

Autrefois on enregistrait sur cassette audio, aujourd'hui il est possible d'enregistrer sur son disque dur. Mieux encore il est possible d'obtenir automatiquement chaque morceau sous la forme d'un fichier séparé sur le disque dur. On peut pour cela utiliser un programme comme Streamripper. Il fonctionne sous MAC OS X (son nom est alors SRX) et sous Windows. Il s'agit d'un shareware, c'est-à-dire que ce programme peut être utilisé avec ses pleines fonctionnalités avant même de le payer.

If you are on a quest to get a good turntable, read on! I have listed a detailed, but layman friendly guide on how to select your next turntable that I hope you will find useful in your decision process.

A brief forward: After many years of being both an audiophile and a mastering engineer,(and I am still active as both), when the time came for what will most likely be my last turntable, I had to do a bit of real soul searching. The one thing that drove me nuts were some of my peers in the local audiophile community. My experience with some audiophiles is that they tend to be elitist know-it-alls, that will not give you any solid advice other than to spend lots of money like they did. Beware of these types!

You don't need to have deep pockets. I'm of the opinion that you can have great music reproduction on a minimal budget if you zero in on a turntable that will meet your needs and ear. You can find a good 'classic' table from 20.00 to 100.00 in many cases, or get a really great table for 200.00 to 500.00 or so, here on eBay.

Your turntable choice should hinge on what kind of music you listen to, the intended use for the turntable, (archiving to digital, archiving to tape, casual / general listening, or serious listening), how critical your ear is, and to the features you can't live without. For example, someone that collects bootlegs will need a table with variable pitch, as many of these records are mastered at -5% of 33 1/3, but may not need a real high-end table. For those that collect acoustic recordings that were made before 1926 when there was no real speed standard, they will also need variable pitch, but will want something with very stable speed and low noise for archiving purposes.

In the early days of digital audio research, the necessary bandwidth of about 1 Mbps per audio channel was difficult to store. Disk drives had the bandwidth but not the capacity for long recording time, so attention turned to video recorders. These were adapted to store audio samples by creating a pseudo-video waveform which would convey binary as black and white levels. The sampling rate of such a system is constrained to relate simply to the field rate and field structure of the television standard used, so that an integer number of samples can be stored on each usable TV line in the field. Such a recording can be made on a monochrome recorder, and these recording are made in two standards, 525 lines at 60 Hz and 625 lines at 50 Hz. Thus it is possible to find a frequency which is a common multiple of the two and is also suitable for use as a sampling rate.

The allowable sampling rates in a pseudo-video system can be deduced by multiplying the field rate by the number of active lines in a field (blanking lines cannot be used) and again by the number of samples in a line. By careful choice of parameters it is possible to use either 525/60 or 625/50 video with a sampling rate of 44.1KHz.

In 60 Hz video, there are 35 blanked lines, leaving 490 lines per frame or 245 lines per field, so the sampling rate is given by :

60 X 245 X 3 = 44.1 KHz

In 50 Hz video, there are 37 lines of blanking, leaving 588 active lines per frame, or 294 per field, so the same sampling rate is given by

50 X 294 X3 = 44.1 Khz.

The sampling rate of 44.1 KHz came to be that of the Compact Disc. Even though CD has no video circuitry, the equipment used to make CD masters is video based and determines the sampling rate.

An audiophile fact : north American FM sounds more colourful, and it is really pleasing!

Any audiophile who visited North America and had a chance to listen to the local FM radio stations must have felt that there's a noticeable difference between North American FM sound quality vs. anywhere else in the world.

What explains that difference is the fact that the pre-emphasis stage (used to lower the noise in the highest frequencies) is different in north America.

Also, that explains why european radio tuners must be adapted when used in the USA… Their 50 µs de-emphasis circuitry must be transformed into 75 µs, otherwise they sound like "thumping". Of course for the regular modern transistor receiver this process does not worth it : it is cheaper to buy another one in a USA electronic store. For the vintage vaccum tube receivers owned by audiophiles, e.g. the ones that were made in Germany (Grundig…), going the process of replacing some piece of electronics sometimes may worth it. Random noise has a 'triangular' spectral distribution in an FM system, with the effect that noise occurs predominantly at the highest frequencies within the baseband.

This can be offset, to a limited extent, by boosting the high frequencies before transmission and reducing them by a corresponding amount in the receiver.

Reducing the high frequencies in the receiver also reduces the high-frequency noise.

These processes of boosting and then reducing certain frequencies are known as pre-emphasis and de-emphasis, respectively.

The amount of pre-emphasis and de-emphasis used is defined by the time constant of a simple RC filter circuit.

In most of the world a 50 µs time constant is used.

In North America, 75 µs is used.

This applies to both mono and stereo transmissions and to baseband audio (not the subcarriers).

The amount of pre-emphasis that can be applied is limited by the fact that many forms of contemporary music contain more high-frequency energy than the musical styles which prevailed at the birth of FM broadcasting.

They cannot be pre-emphasized as much because it would cause excessive deviation of the FM carrier. (Systems more modern than FM broadcasting tend to use either programme-dependent variable pre-emphasis—e.g. dbx in the BTSC TV sound system—or none at all.)

Les disques analogiques n'utilisent pas d'échantillonnage

Cela signifie que le temps n'est pas découpé pour être numérisé. Le CD, avec son échantillonnage à 44,1kHz est très satisfaisant. Les formats haute définition sortis récemment (SACD et DVD-Audio) ont montré que l'extension de la bande passante au-delà de 20kHz pouvait apporter un plus considérable. Beaucoup d'instruments de musique ont un spectre qui va bien au delà des 20kHz (trompette, percussions...) En évitant l'échantillonnage, le disque noir permet une réponse en phase linéaire jusqu'à plus de 30kHz. Cela se traduit concrètement par une image spatiale stable et très précise. On entend mieux l'acoustique du lieu de prise de son.

Les disques analogiques ont une compression de dynamique soignée
La pleine dynamique d'un orchestre ne peut pas être assumée par la cellule phono. Ce support ne permet que 60dB de dynamique pour presque 100dB pour le CD et plus encore sur le SACD. Pour reproduire fidèlement le message, les ingénieurs du son doivent donc utiliser une compression de la dynamique pour permettre la gravure sur vinyle. Cette compression était particulièrement soignée pour remonter les détails dans les passages faibles, maîtriser les fortés... Les ingénieurs du son qui enregistrent de la musique classique travaillent avec la partition d'orchestre sous les yeux, notant avec le producteur chaque passage. Le réglage d'un compresseur-limiteur est très délicat, certains ingénieurs du son viennent en studio avec leur propre rack contenant les préamplis micros et les compresseurs.

L'enregistrement sur bande analogique, même en 76cm/S, induit aussi une compression dûe à l'enregistrement magnétique. Cela se traduit par un son particulier. Certains artistes enregistrent encore chez eux avec d'anciens magnétos multipistes Ampex, Studer voire Otari... pour retrouver cette couleur très particulière.

Au final, le mastering à partir des bandes nécessite un travail de pré-accentuation (la fameuse courbe RIAA) et de compression. Ce mastering, quand il est fait par un expert, donne au disque toutes ses qualités de dynamique, de lisibilité des signaux subtils et d'équilibre artistique.

Tous ces aspects devraient être considérés comme des défauts par rapport aux performances bien supérieures du CD. Il n'en est rien car il n'est que rarement possible de disposer d'une dynamique de 100dB chez soi. En général, les pièces les plus silencieuses permettent 80dB la nuit. Un salon normal, avec les bruits de la vie courante, la rue à 30m.... permet 40 à 60 dB de dynamique exploitable (c'est à dire sans devenir sourd).En limitant (avec talent) la dynamique, le vinyle nous donne un signal plus facile à écouter, dans lequel plus de détails sont amenés à des seuils audibles.
